What is NMIO?

The National Maritime Intelligence-Integration Office (NMIO) is the unified maritime voice of the United States Intelligence Community (IC). It operates as an IC Service of Common Concern to integrate and streamline intelligence support, providing a whole of government solution to maritime information sharing challenges.

NMIO neither collects nor produces intelligence. It breaks down barriers to information sharing and creates enabling structures and cultures to set the conditions for maritime partners to optimally share data. NMIO works at the national and international level to facilitate the integration of maritime information and intelligence collection and analysis in support of national policy and decision makers, Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA) objectives, and interagency operations, at all levels of the U.S. Government (USG).

Our goal is to enable maritime stakeholders to proactively identify, locate, track, and defeat threats to the interests of the U.S. and its global partners.

Why NMIO?

The terrorist attacks of September 11th 2001 prompted changes in U.S. Intelligence Community business practices. Integration of intelligence support to build a better awareness of the maritime domain, and those operating within, was deemed vital.

Our quality of life and economic well-being are both critically dependent on secure maritime commerce. As an example, 90% of international trade and the majority of the world’s energy supplies move by sea. Prolonged disruption of seaborne commerce would severely impact the U.S. and global economy.

Oceans are the largest ungoverned space on the planet. Terrorists, pirates and smugglers exploit this vast environment to conduct attacks and surreptitiously move illicit materials such as weapons of mass destruction, illegal firearms and narcotics.

As such, the National Maritime Intelligence-Integration Office (NMIO) was established in January 2009 by the Director of National Intelligence to create unity-of-effort through national and global collaboration on intelligence support to maritime security.

The mission of the National Maritime Intelligence-Integration Office (NMIO) is to advance maritime intelligence integration, information sharing, and domain awareness to foster unity of effort to protect the United States and its global interests, its allies, and its partners against threats to, in, or emanating from the global maritime domain.
