complicated looking ship The goal of NMIO's Science and Technology (S&T) Department is to build partnerships and engage academia, think tanks, the private sector and foreign governments to understand the implications of emerging technologies that have the ability to produce new threats or challenges in the maritime environment, or, conversely, those that offer new opportunities to improve maritime security.

Through building partnerships and identifying new technologies, NMIO improves the ability to address current and emerging security challenges associated with these technological advancements. The S&T Department's efforts also bring together partners from across the science and technology enterprise, enabling and catalyzing integration across the Global Maritime Community of Interest.
